Sugarcane Squalane: The Secret to Silky, Lightweight Moisture

If you love moisturized skin but don’t love the heavy, greasy feeling that some oils can leave behind, sugarcane-derived squalane is an ingredient worth knowing about.

It’s one of my favorite ingredients to work with, and it plays an important role in The Butter Babe Silk Veil Dry Body Oil.

What Is Squalane?

Squalane is a lightweight emollient used in skincare to soften and condition the skin.

Here’s where it gets interesting: our skin naturally contains squalene—with an “e”—as part of its surface oils. Squalene, however, is more prone to oxidation. Squalane—with an “a”—is the more stable, hydrogenated form commonly used in cosmetic formulations.

Cosmetic safety experts have reviewed both squalane and squalene and concluded that they are safe for use in cosmetics under current conditions of use.

Why Sugarcane?

Squalane can come from different sources, including olives and sugarcane. Modern sugarcane-derived squalane can be produced through fermentation and biotechnology, creating a highly stable, plant-derived emollient without relying on traditional animal sources.

That combination of performance, consistency and lightweight feel is one of the reasons I like sugarcane-derived squalane so much.

What Does Squalane Do for Your Skin?

Squalane is an emollient, meaning it helps soften and smooth the skin while supporting the skin’s moisture barrier.

Instead of feeling thick or sitting heavily on top of the skin, squalane has a beautifully light, silky texture. That makes it especially useful when you want moisture without a greasy finish.

Moisturizers and emollient-rich products work partly by helping reduce moisture loss from the skin and supporting hydration.

Some of the reasons I enjoy formulating with squalane include:

  • Lightweight moisture without a heavy after-feel

  • A soft, silky skin feel

  • Helps reduce the dry, rough feeling of skin

  • Works beautifully alongside other nourishing plant oils

  • Excellent slip and spreadability

  • Leaves skin looking smooth and conditioned

Squalene vs. Squalane: What’s the Difference?

The names are almost identical, but they aren’t quite the same.

Squalene occurs naturally in human sebum as well as in some plants and animals. Because it contains unsaturated bonds, it can oxidize more easily.

Squalane is the saturated, more oxidation-resistant version. That added stability makes it particularly useful in skincare and body-care formulations.

So when you see squalane on a skincare ingredient list, you’re looking at the stable emollient form.

Why I Use It in Silk Veil Dry Body Oil

When I created Silk Veil Dry Body Oil, I wanted something different from a traditional heavy body oil.

I wanted an oil that could give the skin moisture and softness while still feeling elegant and lightweight.

That is exactly where sugarcane squalane shines.

It forms the foundation of Silk Veil and is blended with carefully selected plant oils to create an oil that spreads beautifully across the skin and leaves behind a soft, satiny finish instead of an overly greasy coating.

That silky finish is also the inspiration behind the name Silk Veil.

How to Use a Dry Body Oil

For the best experience, apply body oil after bathing or showering while the skin is still slightly damp.

Massage a small amount over the skin and allow it to absorb.

Applying oil to slightly damp skin helps create that soft, conditioned feeling while sealing in some of the water already on the skin.

And remember: with a concentrated body oil, you usually don't need much.

A Simple Ingredient Can Make a Big Difference

One thing I’ve learned from making body care is that a formula doesn’t need dozens of trendy ingredients to feel luxurious.

Sometimes choosing the right ingredients in the right combination makes all the difference.

Sugarcane-derived squalane is one of those ingredients for me. It’s lightweight, silky and versatile—and it helps give Silk Veil Dry Body Oil the elegant feel I wanted from the very beginning.

Soft skin. Lightweight moisture. A silky finish. That’s the beauty of Silk Veil.
